【Course Objectives】

In nature-based tourist sites around the world, well-balanced management is required between nature protection and human activities. One of the popular institutional measures for it is designating protected area. The aim of the class is to learn the current ways of planning of protected areas and discuss their challenges in the age of sustainable tourism.

【Course Contents】

Selecting a tourist site where is based on natural resources, features of natural environment, history of human activities including tourism, and institutions applied for the purpose of conservation (protection or tourists’ use) of the natural resources (e.g. National park) are surveyed. Then, participants examine 1)the agent of the institution, 2)name of protected area and its purpose, 3)ways of determining the area, 4)examples of the protected area, and 5)regulation of development or tourist behavior in the area. Finally, all participants discuss the characteristics and challenges of each institutions.
