In this course, we shall examine how tourism started as a phenomenon that is typical of Modern Europe by reading literary texts. Students are also expected to become familiar with techniques of literary analysis.
In this course, students are expected to read the most reliable Japanese translation of the Canon of Sherlock Holmes (Conan Doyle, 1887-1930) and the explanatory notes for some critical editions of this series.

ヨーロッパ近代に特有の現象として観光が発生した経緯を，文学作品の読解を通して理解する．合わせてテクスト分析の基本的な手法を学ぶ．
In this course, we shall examine how tourism started as a phenomenon that is typical of Modern Europe by reading literary texts. Students are also expected to become familiar with techniques of literary analysis.
コナン・ドイルのシャーロック・ホームズシリーズは，その現代版ドラマ等による新展開に伴い，新たなブームを迎えている．観光学的には「聖地巡礼」の端緒に位置づけられる．批評版の注等も参照しつつ第二短編集『シャーロック・ホームズの思い出』を刊行順に精読することでこの神話の成立過程をたどりなおし，二次創作をはじめとする受容にも目を配り，適宜映像や図版資料の紹介を交え，理解を深めるよすがとしたい．
