In this course, we shall examine how tourism started as a phenomenon that is typical of Modern Europe by reading literary texts. Students are also expected to become familiar with techniques of literary analysis.
The Arsène Lupin series by Maurice Leblanc, while written with Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes series in mind, developed in a completely different and original direction. It has enjoyed great popularity in Japan, giving rise to derivative works, most notably Lupin the Third, and even inspiring fan-organized “pilgrimages” to related sites. This course closely examines the first short-story collection, Arsène Lupin, Gentleman Burglar (1907), in order to elucidate the process of character creation and its relationship to the places that serve as the setting and to tourism in general.

モーリス・ルブランのアルセーヌ・ルパンシリーズは，先行するコナン・ドイルのシャーロック・ホームズシリーズを意識しつつも，まったく異なる独自の展開を見せた．とりわけ日本での人気は高く，ルパン三世をはじめとする二次創作を生み出し，ファンによる聖地巡礼も実施されている．第一短編集『怪盗紳士アルセーヌ・ルパン』を精読し，キャラクター生成の過程，舞台となる土地や観光との関係を解明する．
