【Course Objectives】

Students will master the fundamental, practical know-how required of certified public psychologists. Through visits to the actual workplace of a certified public psychologist, students will come to understand the following both intellectually and experientially: (A) knowledge and know-how regarding clients, etc., in particular (1) communication, (2) psychological examinations, (3) psychological interviews, (4) support for communities, etc.; (B) how to understand clients, grasp their needs, and create support plans; (C) team approaches to client support; (D) cooperation among multiple professions and within communities; and (E) the professional ethics and legal obligations of certified public psychologists. By taking charge of cases during on-campus practical training, students will acquire the knowledge and skills required to conduct psychological examinations and interviews.

【Course Contents】

After understanding the fundamental knowledge and skills that are essential for certified public psychologists, students will visit the actual workplace of a therapist and will receive guidance from the responsible instructor or faculty member in the following areas:
(A) knowledge and know-how regarding clients, etc., in particular (1) communication, (2) psychological examinations, (3) psychological interviews, (4) support for communities, etc.; (B) understanding clients, grasping their needs, and creating support plans; (C) team approaches to client support; (D) cooperation among multiple professions and within communities; and (E) the professional ethics and legal obligations of certified public psychologists. Among the five major fields of practical training, students must complete off-campus training in one or more of the following fields at an eligible institution or institutions: welfare, education, industry, justice.
Note: Eligible institutions are determined separately by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science & Technology and the Minister of Health, Labour & Welfare based on the Enforcement Regulations Article 3 (paragraph 3) of the Certified Psychological Therapist Act (2017, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science & Technology / Ministry of Health, Labour & Welfare Notice No. 5) For one field, 1 hour of pre-training, 3 hours of workplace practical training, and 1 hour of follow-up training are required.
Practical training in psychological examinations and interviews is conducted on-campus at Rikkyo University, at the Psychological Counseling Center, for the case(s) being managed by each student. For each case, ten sessions are required. Each session lasts for 4 hours and includes practice, record keeping, debriefing, and supervision (individual or group).
