The goal of this course is to acquire an understanding of the basic concepts and theoretical frameworks of performance studies.
In this course, we will explore foundational texts in performance studies, aiming to understand the basic concepts and theoretical frameworks of the field. This year, we will focus in particular on the issue of “surveillance.”
Surveillance is both a politics and a set of technologies organized around seeing and being seen. Moreover, through practices such as measurement, recording, identification, and evaluation, surveillance regulates—and even produces—the conduct of its subjects. Surveillance is performative in the literal sense. These effects are becoming increasingly pronounced today as surveillance is intertwined with technologies such as CCTV, social media, and biometric identification. The course will examine these issues broadly through a combination of close readings of relevant literature and student-led presentations based on each participant’s interests.
In each session, one or more designated students will present a summary of the assigned readings, followed by additional comments from the instructor as needed and a class-wide discussion. In the second half of the course, students will give presentations based on their own interests, building on the material covered in the first half.
Readings will include works by Elise Morrison, James M. Harding, and others; however, the final selection of texts will also take into account students’ needs and preferences.

パフォーマンス研究の基礎的な概念や理論的枠組を理解する。
The goal of this course is to acquire an understanding of the basic concepts and theoretical frameworks of performance studies.
本授業では、パフォーマンス研究の基本文献を講読し、パフォーマンス研究の基礎的な概念や理論的枠組の理解を目指す。今年度は特に、「監視」の問題に焦点をあてる。
監視とは「見る／見られる」ことをめぐる政治であり技術である。また監視は、測定・記録・識別・評価といった機能を通じて、見られる者のふるまいを規制し、さらには生産してもおり、文字通りにパフォーマティヴなものでもある。監視のこうした作用は、監視カメラやSNS、生体認証などの技術と結びつきながら、今日いっそう強まっている。この授業では、関連する文献の読解や、受講者それぞれの関心に基づいての自由発表などを取り混ぜて、上述の問題を広く検討していく。
毎回の授業では、担当者が講読範囲をレジュメにまとめて発表し、必要に応じて教員が補足を行った上で、クラス全体で議論を行う。後半の授業では、前半の授業内容も踏まえた上で、受講者各自の関心に基づいての自由発表も行う。
講読文献に関しては、エリース・モリソンやジェームズ・M・ハーディングらのものを予定しているが、受講者の関心も考慮して決定する。
