In this course, students will read several essential texts on photography to deepen the understanding of photographic images. The primary focus is on understanding the myriad forms of expression in photography as a means of mechanical perception from the standpoint of body expression and cinematic arts and reengaging with the meaning of viewing photographs in the contemporary world.
The study of mechanical images forms one of the core elements in the Department of Body Expression and Cinematic Arts. After first studying the foundation of body expression and cinematic arts and reading related texts, students will deepen their understanding of the essence of photography through an analysis of photographic images. The course will focus on texts by photography pioneers who explored the essence of photography as well as young and talented photographers, including works by Franz Roh, Jeff Wall, and contemporary artists. Furthermore, to ensure that students hone methods of learning approaches to photography through words, the course will have the students select and critique a collection of photographs or a photographic work and present their assessments in the second half of the class.

この授業は、写真分野におけるいくつかの必読文献を読み、学生が写真映像への理解を深めるのを促す。この授業では、とりわけ機械の知覚としての写真の多彩な表現を映像身体学の観点から理解すること、並びに、現代において写真をみることの意義を再認することを目標とする。
In this course, students will read several essential texts on photography to deepen the understanding of photographic images. 機械映像についての学びは、映像身体学専攻の学びの核のひとつを成す。まずは、映像身体学の基礎をおさえたうえで関連文献を読み、さらに写真映像を分析することによって写真の本質への理解を深める。関連文献では、写真の本質を探究した写真のパイオニアたちや新鋭たち、フランツ・ローやジェフ・ウォールをはじめとする写真家や現代アーティストが書いたものをとりあげる予定。言葉により写真へアプローチすることを学ぶ方法を獲得するのに資するために、本授業の後半では、学生各人が写真集及び作品を選んで批評し、プレゼンテーションする実践的訓練をおこなう。
