The goals of this course are to
(1) Develop the ability to read and critically understand recent empirical research articles based on quantitative social survey data, and to discuss contemporary family and welfare issues from a sociological perspective,
(2) Acquire the skills necessary to collect and interpret the statistical data for your own interest and research.
Quantitative analysis using social survey data is one of the major analytical approaches in social science research and is a useful method for understanding family and welfare issues in Japan, which is facing a rapidly aging and low-fertility society. In recent years, Evidence-Based Policy Making (EBPM) has attracted increasing attention, and the importance of quantitative approaches has grown not only in academic research but also at the levels of central and local governments.
Moreover, even for researchers who primarily employ qualitative approaches—such as interview research and participant observation—acquiring knowledge and skills in quantitative analysis is beneficial for conducting critical examinations of existing literature and research topics.
In this seminar, students will read and discuss recent studies that primarily employ quantitative methods, examine the relationships between family, welfare, and livelihood security, and further deepen their understanding of issues related to their own research interests.

社会調査データを用いた定量的分析は、社会科学研究の主要な分析アプローチの1つであり、少子高齢社会を迎えた日本が抱える家族や福祉の問題を把握するうえで有用な方法である。近年では、「根拠に基づく政策立案（Evidence Based Policy Making: EBPM）」が注目を集め、定量的アプローチの重要性は学術研究のみならず政府・自治体レベルでも高まりを見せている。
さらに定性的アプローチ（インタビュー調査・参与観察など）に基づいて研究を行う者にとっても、定量的分析に関する知識やスキルの修得は、先行研究や研究対象（テーマ）に対する批判的考察を加えるうえで有益と考えられる。
本演習では、最新の定量的研究を中心に文献講読を行い、家族と福祉・生活保障の関連について検討し、さらには自身の研究テーマに関する知見を深めていく。
Quantitative analysis using social survey data is one of the major analytical approaches in social science research and is a useful method for understanding family and welfare issues in Japan, which is facing a rapidly aging and low-fertility society. In recent years, Evidence-Based Policy Making (EBPM) has attracted increasing attention, and the importance of quantitative approaches has grown not only in academic research but also at the levels of central and local governments.
