Notes

【Course Objectives】

This course aims to equip students with fundamental knowledge and skills necessary to understand and carry out the entire research process, from developing a research proposal (research design) to data collection and analysis. In Research Methods I, students will systematically learn the basic concepts required to plan, conduct, and analyze research, beginning with the formulation of research objectives, followed by research design, selection of research methods, and introductory analytical techniques.

Particular emphasis is placed on clarifying the research objective—specifically, identifying “what it is that the research seeks to clarify,” which is essential to the quality of any study. With an eye toward the master’s thesis in the second year (Business Research or Business Design), students who have already determined their research themes are expected to organize the key issues to be clarified in line with their themes, while those who have not yet decided on a theme are encouraged to develop perspectives necessary for setting appropriate research objectives in preparation for future research.

【Course Contents】

Research Methods refers to the scientific approaches used to elucidate the characteristics of human attitudes and behaviors, social facts and phenomena, and the underlying structures or mechanisms that shape them. This course provides a systematic examination of the types and characteristics of research, methods of data collection, and analytical techniques in accordance with specific research objectives.

In Research Methods 1, students will commence by defining a research theme and objective, followed by the development of a simple questionnaire aligned with the research aim, and subsequently conduct basic data analysis. The course is designed to cultivate foundational research skills. Although brief explanations of statistical concepts will be provided as necessary, this course is not intended to serve as an in-depth study of statistics or a review of fundamental mathematical concepts.

Each student is expected to identify and pursue an individual research theme. Ideally, this theme would correspond to topics to be explored in the second-year master’s courses, Business Research or Business Design. However, students who have not yet finalized a topic may select a familiar subject, which will still allow for the practical acquisition of research skills. This course serves as preparatory training for the second year of the master’s program, encouraging students to consider the issues that warrant investigation and to develop the ability to identify and articulate their own research challenges.
