【Course Objectives】

In a stable society, an individual's life is traced through "rites of passage" at each milestone. It is a process of learning social norms through symbolic experiences and deepening one's belonging. However, in a rapidly changing and unstable society, norms themselves become fluid, making it difficult to establish social belonging.

The Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011 was not only a disaster of unprecedented scale, but also an identity crisis that shook the very assumptions on which our society was built. And after 2020, humanity experienced the Corona Pandemic, which made us keenly aware that the world is connected as one. Due to parallel geopolitical tensions, we have entered an era in which globalism and localism are at odds with each other. The destruction caused by conflicts and wars that have erupted in various parts of the world, as well as the destruction of the global environment caused by seemingly peaceful economic activities, are all rooted in the activities of each and every one of us as human beings. What we may think of as "someone else's problem," or "something that happens in another country," is all connected.

Our society itself is going through a huge "rite of passage" with no way out in sight. In such times, individuals have a responsibility to actively mark the trajectory of their lives in contemporary history. It is a process of proactively reestablishing social norms and belonging without being swept away by destabilizing and fluid social conditions. I myself have experienced a rite of passage of burnout in my work. By reflecting on my past life and being helped by others, I was able to re-establish social norms and belonging appropriate to the present time and step forward into my future life.

In this class, I will navigate through the origins and endings of life, using the Narrative Matrix Theory, which systematizes what I have learned through my own experiences, as a foundation. We look back on our "past" life experiences and give them new meaning (re-telling). This sometimes means a transformation of the (old) identity that defines the present self (especially when "silent stories" emerge). Then, starting from the renewed "now," the "ideal life" is brought forth through life design that looks to the "future". By facing this series of processes as a team (community), the collaborative editing of a new social story (a story of social norms and belonging) begins.

【Course Contents】

After the first orientation session, the class will unfold in four stages ("introduction, development, transformation, conclusion"), with time for a summary at the end. The entire class will unfold as "one story".
(1) Introduction: Outline of life story (a story that goes through the past, present, and future)
(2) Developoment: Discovery of personality (framework for viewing oneself objectively)
(3) Transformation: Rites of passage and society (opportunities for personal growth)
(4) Conclusion: Life story as a hero's journey (designing an "ideal life")
In this class, while referring to life story as a method in sociology and psychology, we will not stick to a strict academic definition, but will use it as one of the methods to make the field of social design three-dimensional. Taking "3.11" and the Corona pandemic as the starting point of shared experiences, we will combine the four life stages of "childhood, adolescence, middle age, and old age" with the "chronology and generational theory" of nearly 80 years of postwar history, and by linking each life story together, transform "my story" into "our story and society's story" by combining the life stages and generational theories of nearly 80 years of postwar history and connecting the life stories of each individual. Such a collective narrative will serve as a platform for social design practices to realize diverse "ideal lives".
