In a stable society, an individual’s life follows a series of milestone “rites of passage.” Through these symbolic experiences, people learn social norms and deepen their sense of belonging. However, in a society marked by rapid change and instability, the norms themselves become fluid, making it difficult to establish social belonging.
The Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011 was not only an unprecedented disaster; it was also an identity crisis that shook the very foundations of the society we had built. Since 2020, humanity’s experience of the COVID-19 pandemic has made us acutely aware that the world is interconnected as one. At the same time, rising geopolitical tensions have ushered in an era in which globalism and localism are in constant tension. The destruction caused by conflicts and wars erupting around the world, as well as the damage to the global environment brought about by seemingly peaceful economic activity, all ultimately stem from the actions of each of us as human beings. What we dismiss as “someone else’s problem” or “another country’s issue” is, in fact, all interconnected.
Our society itself is confronting a massive “rite of passage” with no clear exit in sight. In such an era, individuals bear the responsibility of actively inscribing the trajectory of their own lives into contemporary history. I believe this process involves not being swept along by increasingly unstable and fluid social conditions, but instead proactively restoring social norms and a sense of belonging. I myself went through a rite of passage of burnout in my professional life. By reflecting on my past, receiving help from others, and reestablishing social norms and belonging, I was able to step forward into a future life.
In this course, drawing on the Story Matrix Theory that I systematized from my own lived experiences, we will navigate the narrative arc of life—introduction, development, turning point, and conclusion. We will look back on life experiences from the “past” and assign them new meanings through reinterpretation and retelling. At times, this entails a transformation of the (old) identity that defines the present self—particularly when “silent stories” emerge. Then, starting from a renewed “present,” we will envision the “future” through life design and draw closer to an “ideal life.” By engaging in this entire process as a team (community), we begin the collaborative editing of new social stories—stories of renewed social norms and belonging.
After the first orientation session, the course unfolds across four stages (“introduction, development, turning point, and conclusion”), followed by a final session for overall reflection. The entire course is designed to unfold as “one single story.”
Introduction — An overview of life stories (a narrative that runs through the past, present, and future)
Development — Discovering personality (a framework for viewing the self objectively)
Turning Point — Rites of passage and society (catalysts for personal growth)
Conclusion — The life story as a hero’s journey (designing an “ideal life”)
In this course, while drawing on the concept of life stories as used in sociology, psychology, and related fields, we do not adhere rigidly to strict academic definitions. Instead, we use life stories as one method for giving three-dimensional form to the practice of social design. Taking “3.11” and the COVID-19 pandemic as shared experiential starting points, we combine the four life stages—childhood, youth, midlife, and old age—with perspectives on historical periods and generations across nearly 80 years of postwar history. By weaving individual life stories together, we transform “my story” into “our story” and into the story of society. Such collective narratives become a platform for social design practices that enable the realization of diverse “ideal lives.”

本科目は授業回の全てにおいて、理論等学術的な知見を踏まえつつ、担当教員の実務家としての経験、または研究成果を活かし、教員と学生との双方向の討論を重視した実践的な授業とする。学生には、課題の発表や討論など、授業での積極的な参加を期待する。
安定した社会においては、個人の人生は、節目ごとの「通過儀礼」をなぞります。それは社会的規範を象徴的な体験を通して学び、帰属を深めていくプロセスといえます。しかし、変化が激しく不安定な社会においては、規範自体も流動化し、社会的帰属を確立することが難しくなります。
2011年の東日本大震災は、未曾有の大災害であっただけでなく、私たちが築き上げてきた社会の前提を揺るがすアイデンティティ・クライシスでした。そして2020年以降、コロナ・パンデミックを体験した人類は、世界はひとつにつながっていることを痛烈に実感させられました。並行して進む地政学的な緊張により、グローバリズムとローカリズムがせめぎ合う時代に入りました。各地で勃発する紛争や戦争による破壊行為も、いっけん平和な経済活動がもたらす地球環境の破壊も、おおもとには、私たち一人ひとりの人間としての営為があります。「他人事、よその国のこと」と思うこともすべてつながっています。
私たちの社会そのものが、出口の見えない巨大な「通過儀礼」に遭遇しています。そういう時代にあっては、個人は自分の人生の軌跡を現代史の中に積極的に刻む責務を負っています。それは、不安定化し流動化する社会状況に流されず、主体的に社会的規範と帰属を再興していくプロセスとなると私は考えています。私自身、仕事で燃え尽きる通過儀礼を経験しました。過去の人生を振返り、他者に助けられ、社会的規範と帰属を再興し、未来の人生へと踏み出すことができました。
本授業では、私が実体験を通して学んだことを体系化した物語マトリクス理論を礎にし、人生の起承転結をナビゲートしていきます。「過去」の人生体験を振り返り、新しい意味づけ（語り直し）をします。それは時に、現在の自己を規定する（古い）アイデンティティの変容を意味します（特に「沈黙のストーリー」が出現するとき）。そして、刷新された「今」を起点に、「未来」を展望するライフデザインを通して「理想の人生」を手繰り寄せていきます。この一連のプロセスにチーム（コミュニティ）で向き合うことで、新しいソーシャルストーリー（社会的規範と帰属の物語）の協働編集が始まります。

第1回のオリエンテーションのあと、 4ステージ（「起承転結」）で展開し、最後に総括の時間をもつ。本授業全体が「ひとつの物語」として展開します。
（１） 起―ライフストーリー概論（過去・現在・未来を貫く物語）
（２） 承―パーソナリティの発見（自己を客観視する枠組み）
（３） 転―通過儀礼と社会（自己成長の契機）
（４） 結―英雄の旅としてのライフストーリー（「理想の人生」のデザイン）
本授業では、社会学や心理学などの手法としてのライフストーリーを参考にしつつ、厳密な学問的定義にはこだわらず、社会デザインの現場を立体化する手法のひとつとして活用します。「3.11」とコロナ・パンデミックを共有体験の起点とし、「幼年期・青年期・中年期・老年期」という４ライフステージと、80年近く経つ戦後史の「時代論・世代論」を組み合わせ、それぞれのライフストーリーをひとつなぎにすることで、「私の物語」を「私たちの物語・社会の物語」に変換していきます。そうした集合的な物語は、多様な「理想の人生」を実現する社会デザイン実践のプラットフォームとなります。
