【Course Objectives】

SDGs are already less than a half way to go. Unfortunately achieving goals are now less feasible due to COVID-19, and international conflicts in Ukraine and in Middle East, besides extreme weathers damaging our society caused by climate crisis, resulting in price hikes of energy and food and other commodities . However, on the other hand our market based capitalism society has started to transform into a more sustainable one ,which Kishida Cabinet called New Capitalism. Not just peoples mind but the purpose of the corporation, and the return investors are seeking are also transforming. Besides financial return, solving social issues will be the purpose of the business, and such social impacts are the return that more and more investors are seeking, which are indicated by CSR, SDGs management, ESG investment and ESG finance. In this course we will see why this transformation to stakeholder capitalism has happened and what are the social issues to be solved and will seek to learn about the new role of business and finance as promoters of sustainable society.

【Course Contents】

Stakeholder capitalism, which is regarded as new and sustainable capitalism, will require business to solve social issues such as climate change, as their purpose of corporate activities. In order to understand such transformation, we must first ask what is the meaning of sustainability represented by SDGs? In this course we will go over the major environmental and social issues, and study about the role of the international initiatives such as SDGs and Paris Agreement, both of which are intended to transform our society. We will also study the missions and roles of business sector and also of finance to make the society more sustainable.
