【Course Objectives】

In order to design better societies and communities, studying social problems and phenomena called social pathology is one of the important tools. In this course, we will introduce various theoretical frameworks for analyzing social problems, mainly from sociology. In addition, the aim is that students will be able to decide for themselves what perspectives are suitable for their own interests and research objectives.

【Course Contents】

First, we will explain that the perspective to study social problems is roughly divided into positivism and interpretivism. Next, we will introduce the theoretical frameworks corresponding to each perspective (in the case of positivism, social disintegration theory, deviant behavior theory, and functionalism; in the case of interpretivism, labeling theory and constructivism approach) using examples of famous pieces of research. In addition, research methods such as multivariate analysis and text mining will be reviewed. Finally, the students will select one social problem that they are interested in and analyze and report on it using any of the theoretical frameworks introduced.
