【Course Objectives】

"The objectives of the course are: (1)To examine the possibilities of visual expression and documentation through the scrutiny of the post-war history of the United States, including various visual media, including film. (2)To formulate hypotheses regarding the culture and ethos of American society, considering a comparative perspective with Japan and Europe. (3)To deepen the study of the methodology of cross-cultural analysis, taking into account comparative viewpoints with Japan and Europe."

【Course Contents】

"What is the essence of the 'superpower,' often characterized by calls for division and a heightened sense of opacity, and how did the United States, acknowledged as the undisputed 'leader of the world' and an ideal democracy, evolve into its present form?
This course will explore the trajectory of post-war America, incorporating a subcultural perspective, by tracing the records of various visual expressions, including fiction/non-fiction, to investigate the form of the nation and its cultural ethos. Simultaneously, we will discover the significance of examining society, history, and group dynamics through visual media.
With a comparative cultural perspective, including Europe and Japan, let's consider the reality of the 'experimental nation' America from multiple angles. The aim is also to discover possibilities for new interpretations of society by acquiring alternative viewpoints and ways of thinking."
