【Course Objectives】

What do “education,” “learning,” and “sustainability” mean for you, and for all of us? In this course, we will explore this question by reflecting on the development of education for sustainable development (ESD) and reviewing the world that we live in, while discussing ESD as a transformative process of people and society.

【Course Contents】

In this course, the students will collaboratively learn from each other through not only lectures and readings but also groupworks, discussions, role-plays, and other diverse methods.

Since the concept of sustainable development was introduced in the 1980s, discussion and practice to promote education for sustainable development (ESD) has evolved in the international community. ESD plays a role to create greater awareness of the interplay of environmental, economic, and social issues using a long-term, holistic perspective, and to facilitate action for sustainability. With Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs: 2016-2030), the importance of ESD has been recognized further, as a transformative process of people and society in a borderless collaboration of diverse stakeholders.

Topics to be focused in each class are subject to change based on students' interest.
