This course aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the concept and practice of human security, which focuses on human being as the referent objective of security and being instrumental to accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The concept of human security emerged in response to shifts in the international political landscape following the end of the Cold War, the evolving role of the United Nations, and the growing awareness of human rights. Today, traditional concerns such as armed conflicts and natural disasters have become more acute, while new challenges, including climate change, pandemics, and aging societies have surfaced. Adopting a human security perspective provides an effective means of grasping and appropriately responding to these global issues. In this course, students will learn the comprehensive concept and practice of human security through case studies spanning various sectors and countries.
