【Course Objectives】

Political geography is a sub-discipline in human geography that investigates power relations in the spatial organisation of social groups, institutions, and the environment. This course aims to learn the research trend of political (and human) geography since the ‘scalar turn’ in the 1990s. The course examines a variety of theories that discuss the production/construction of ‘space’ and the politics of ‘scale.’ It also discusses their implications for key research topics such as development planning, globalisation, social movement, environmental politics, and urban-rural relations.

【Course Contents】

The course consists of three parts. The first part discusses major theories of ‘space’ that developed since the 1980s: Marxist political economy (e.g. Smith, Brenner, Harvey) and social constructivism (e.g., postmodernism, post-structuralism, and post-colonial theory). The second part introduces the ‘scalar turn ' in the 1990s and discusses key research articles that cover various topics related to the ‘politics of scale’. The third part discusses various research on governance through the lens of the political ecology of scaling.
