Notes

【Course Objectives】

I expect students to become familiar with theoretical and empirical works on local government and its roles in providing public services. The course emphasizes social scientific reasoning and encourages students to critically evaluate scholarly works.

【Course Contents】

Local government provides a wide range of public services today. We examine local governments from various perspectives, covering topics such as decentralization, democratic accountability, the size of local governments, and the impact of broader structural changes. We also study local government in Japan in order to relate theories and findings from the academic literature to the real-world contexts.
