Notes

【Course Objectives】

1. Students will understand basic concepts and key considerations in research methods in applied linguistics.
2. Students will understand research designs, methods of data collection, and data analysis techniques.
3. Students will be able to apply appropriate research designs and analytical methods to effectively conduct an applied linguistics study.

【Course Contents】

-This course introduces research methods commonly used in applied linguistics and language learning research. To achieve this goal, students will give presentations on assigned chapters from The Routledge Handbook of Research Methods in Applied Linguistics (McKinley & Rose, 2023). These presentations will be followed by class discussions focusing on key methodological considerations in conducting applied linguistics research, as well as on how the methods introduced can be applied to students’ own research.
-Specifically, students will first learn fundamental concepts and key considerations related to research methods. They will then examine various research designs, methods of data collection, and approaches to data analysis.
-By the end of the course, students will reflect on how the research methods learned can be applied to their own research interests and consider possible directions for future research.
