By the end of this course, students will:
1. To have an understanding of the main linguistic and cultural differences between Japanese and English that affect the teaching of speaking and listening to Japanese learners
2. To have an understanding of the principal methods and techniques for teaching speaking and listening and the philosophies behind the approaches that govern them
3. To develop an awareness of identity issues in the world today
4. To have an understanding of the range of issues impacting the teaching of English listening and speaking in Japanese classrooms today.
This course is primarily aimed at those with potential plans to teach English speaking to Japanese learners but should also be relevant to those concerned with cultural and linguistic differences between Japanese and English, as well as those interested in current approaches to language teaching. The first half of the course focuses on cultural and linguistic differences between Japanese and English with a particular focus on areas of common difficulty. It also explores the reasons behind these difficulties. The second half of the course focuses on practical ways to address these issues through classroom activities designed to motivate, engage, and build listening and speaking skills. Course participants will also have opportunities to share their own areas of interest.

Participants should be confident speakers of English, ideally with experience or interest in language teaching and/or learning. Being able to read academic papers in English would be useful, though the overall content of readings will be introduced orally using PPT during class.
Laptop/tablet and/or paper notebook would be useful (though not required).
Hopefully you will be able to both learn from this class and share any experiences or ideas that you may have with teaching or learning language or the challenges this can involve.
The following minimum level of English Language Proficiency is expected at the time of registration: TOEFL (iBT) 90 and/or IELTS 6.5.
