In this class, we aim to deepen our understanding of language in culture, by drawing on key concepts from linguistic anthropology, sociolinguistics, and social semiotics.
This course centers on linguistic anthropology. Using concepts such as "indexicality," "iconicity," and "language ideology," we aim to broaden our understanding of how power relations, institutional norms, and identity construction emerge in communication events.
Students are encouraged to link these linguistic anthropological concepts and analytical perspectives to their own research topics.
The course readings will consist of case studies from Japan, as well as materials from other sociocultural contexts, including some in English.

言語学、記号論、言語人類学を多少なりとも学んだことがあると望ましい。
言語人類学に興味関心があるメディア研究、芸術、歴史、宗教、法律などの分野の履修者も歓迎する。
言語人類学と社会記号論における基本的な分析概念を用いて、言語と文化の接点についての理解を深めることを主目的とする。
In this class, we aim to deepen our understanding of language in culture, by drawing on key concepts from linguistic anthropology, sociolinguistics, and social semiotics.
本授業では、言語人類学における主要概念（指標性、類像性、言語イデオロギー、メタ語用）を用いながら、実際のコミュニケーション出来事において権力関係、制度的規範、アイデンティティ構築といった社会文化的プロセスがどのように立ち現れるのかを分析、議論する。また、言語人類学の理論的枠組みや概念、研究方法が各受講者の研究課題とどのように接続可能かを模索する。
授業で扱う事例の多くは日本の言語文化に基づくことになるが、世界のさまざまな地域の言語社会文化的文脈も取り上げたい。英語の文献も多く読み、議論を深める。
