We treat generations as a single layer that takes hold of the present, replaces its predecessors, and is in turn replaced by the younger generation. This idea that the working generation gradually comes to the fore as it lives its life, and then declines as it gives way to its successors, is based on the idea of progress in history that was cultivated in the Age of Enlightenment, according to Tim Ingold. This way of thinking about generations has become a major premise for the discussion of the social and environmental crises that we are facing. However, Ingold believes that if we continue to use this way of thinking, we will not be able to deal with the crises we are facing. In this class, we will read and discuss the anthropologist Ingold's theory of generations, and learn anthropological thought.
In this class, students will read the Japanese translation of Tim Ingold’s The Rise and Fall of Generation Now.

私たちは、世代を、現在を掌握し、前任者に取って代わり、それに前後して、後進者に取って代わられるひとつの層として扱っています。現役世代は生きている中で次第に表舞台に上がって活躍し、その後、後継者たちに道を譲る中で衰えていくというこの考えは、インゴルドによれば、啓蒙思想の中で培われた進歩史観に基づいているのです。そうした世代の捉え方こそが、私たちの目の前にある社会・環境危機をめぐる議論を進める上での大きな前提となってきたのです。しかし、その考え方を今後も用いるのであれば、私たちが直面している危機には処することはできないだろうというのが、インゴルドの見立てです。この授業では、人類学者インゴルドの世代論を取り上げて輪読し、人類学的思考を学びます。
