In the age of Donald Trump, as societies withdraw into themselves, how might we pierce an opening toward the “outside”? For those of us forced to inhabit what could be called a “fundamentally impossible life,” what, at its core, is anthropology, and what kinds of futures might it still enable? By undertaking fieldwork in the intellectual workshops of four major contemporary anthropologists, and by widening its horizon of inquiry to include contemporary artists and the science-fiction writer Ursula K. Le Guin, the book reflects on the very conditions of anthropological thought. Through a reading of Japanese translation of Anand Pandian’s " A Possible Anthropology", it seeks to explore anthropology not merely as a discipline, but as a mode of thinking capable of reopening the world.
