Social and cultural anthropology of nature emerged around 1990 as "ontological" anthropology. The trend eventually led gently to another trend, multispecies anthropology in the 2010s. In this class, we will take up an ethnography of "ontological" anthropology and reflect on what the ontological turn in anthropology has been.This will develop the understanding of the perspectives and theories.
In this course, we will be reading "Soul Hunters" written by Danish anthropologist Rane Willerslev in a roundtable discussion. It is an ethnography based on fieldwork he conducted as a hunter himself with the Yukagir, a group of hunters living in Siberia. We will develop an understanding of topics such as animism, hunting practices, body and soul, animal personhood, post-socialism, and ""taking others seriously"".

自然をめぐる社会・文化人類学は、1990年前後に「存在論的」人類学として出現した。その潮流はやがて、2010年代になると、マルチスピーシーズ人類学というもう一つの潮流へとなだらかにつながっていった。本授業では、「存在論的」人類学の民族誌を取り上げて、人類学における存在論的転回とは何であったのかを振り返る。そのことにより、視座や理論への理解を深める。

この授業では、デンマークの人類学者レーン・ウィラースレフの『ソウル・ハンターズ』 を輪読する。それは、シベリアに住む狩猟民ユカギールのもとで、自らもハンターとして行ったフィールドワークに基づいて書かれた民族誌である。アニミズム、狩猟実践、身体と霊魂、動物の人格、ポスト社会主義、「他者を真剣に受け取ること」などのトピックに関して、理解を深めていく。
