This class will focus on postcolonialism and ethnicity, imperialism in East Asian film history, and will use nationalism and gender as keywords to understand the identities of various cultural positions. In particular, this seminar will use theories and analytical methods to read and understand films made in a variety of genres and locations.
This seminar will focus on East Asian cinema over the past 100 years from pre-war to post war period. By focusing on the contemporaneous and transnational aspects of films made in Japan, Taiwan, and Korea (including colonial Korea), we can get closer to the question of what postcolonialism means in this area.

本授業は東アジアの映画史を振り返り、そのなかからみえてくる帝国主義とポストコロニアリズムとエスニシティに注目し、そこから生まれてくるナショナリズム、ジェンダーなどをキーワードにして、様々な立場のアイデンティティを理解していくことを目的とする。とりわけ、理論や分析方法を用いて、多様なジャンルや地域で作られた映画を読み解いていく。

本授業では戦前から戦後にかける100年間にわたる東アジアの映画を題材とする。日本、韓国（植民地朝鮮も含む）で作られた映画の同時代的・トランスナショナル側面に注目することで、この地域のポストコロニアリズムとは何かという問題により近づくことができる。
