By reading Mendelssohn's letters, students learn about the composer's personality and works, as well as examine the European culture of the first half of the 19th century, which he was deeply involved in. They will also consider the significance and limitations of letters as a research subject.
The German Romantic composer, Mendelssohn, was not only musically gifted, but also literary and artistically talented. He wrote over 6,000 letters. In 2017, a 12-volume collection of his letters was completed. In this class, we will select some of Mendelssohn's letters, examine their content from musicological and historical perspectives, and complete Japanese translations from the original German. The letters are written in German (with a few exceptions in English and French).

手紙の言語はドイツ語である（僅かに英語やフランス語などもある）。ロマン派の音楽と芸術、19世紀ヨーロッパの社会情勢をドイツ語で読み解く能力が求められる。
メンデルスゾーンの書簡を通して、この作曲家の人となりと作品の魅力に触れ、彼が繋がりをもつ19世紀前半のヨーロッパ文化全体を多角的に考察する。テクストとして書簡を読み、内容理解を深めると同時に、研究対象として書簡の意義と限界を知る。

ドイツ・ロマン派の作曲家メンデルスゾーンは、音楽のみならず、文学や絵画にも秀でた才能を発揮した。38年の生涯において彼は6000通を超える手紙を書いた。2017年には12巻からなる書簡全集が完結した。この授業では、メンデルスゾーンの手紙をいくつかピックアップし、音楽的、歴史的視点から内容を吟味しつつ講読し、ドイツ語原文から美しい日本語訳を完成させる。
