In order to deepen the way of understanding global history, this class will read in detail James C. Scott's <The Art of Not Being Governed: An Anarchist History of Upland Southeast Asia>, which deals with the historical and cultural features of the people residing in the Highland Southeast Asia, based on the methodology connoting political science, history and anthropology. The class will also encourage the Ph. D. students to apply the essence of the understanding of global history into each of their dissertations.
In this class, we will read and discuss James C. Scott's famous book <The Art of Not Being Governed: An Anarchist History of Upland Southeast Asia>, which deals with the historical and cultural features of the people residing in the Highland Southeast Asia (so called Zomia). The book which is based on the methodology connoting political science, history and anthropology, has received both praise and criticism up to nowadays, but it is still one of the most important literary works in the studies of global history.

学期を通じて James C. Scott の大著『ゾミア：脱国家の世界史』を精読し、相互に議論を深める。同著は東南アジアを中心とする山地少数民族の生存戦略を「支配されないための技術」としてとらえ、政治学・歴史学・人類学を包摂した方法論を用いて個性的に論じたことで知られる名著である。賞賛と同時に批判も少なくない著作ではあるが、このScott の議論を通じて、グローバル・ヒストリーという考え方の一環を知るための道筋としたい。また、学期中に受講生が取り組んでいる博士論文の紹介の機会ももうける。
