The purpose of this course is to prepare PhD students to conduct independent research in language and communication studies. Specifically, students will learn to (a) critically evaluate extant literature, (b) formulate research questions, (c) collect data, and (d) publish their findings in the form of academic papers.
Through lectures and hands-on sessions, students will learn basic knowledge and skills required for conducting PhD research in the field of language and communication studies. Topics covered will include validity and reliability, different kinds of scales (ratio, interval, ordinal, and nominal), descriptive statistics (means, variances, standard deviations, kurtosis, and skewness), normal distribution, deviation values, inferential statistics, effect sizes, and reference management and citations.

博士課程レベルの言語コミュニケーション研究を行う上で必要な知識を習得し、自立した研究者としての基盤を確立することを目指す。具体的には、先行研究を批判的に考察した上で研究テーマを設定し、データを収集、研究成果を論文としてまとめ、国内あるいは国外の学術誌に発表する能力を養う。

博士課程レベルの言語コミュニケーション研究を行う上で必要な知識を、講義および演習を通して学ぶ。具体的には、研究計画の立て方、妥当性と信頼性、様々な尺度（比例尺度・間隔尺度・順序尺度・名義尺度）、記述統計（平均、分散、標準偏差、歪度、尖度）、正規分布、偏差値、推測統計、効果量、文献管理と引用等について、Excel やWordを使用した演習を交えて学ぶ。
