備考/ NotesNotes |
This course will introduce research methods in second language acquisition (SLA) and applied linguistics for doctoral students. By the end of the course, the following objectives will be met:
1.Students will be able to understand and explain the importance of research in both academic and professional areas.
2.Students will understand the theoretical underpinnings of quantitative inquiry.
3.Students will be able to identify, explain, and evaluate key concepts of quantitative inquiry such as measurement
theory, variable types, psychometrics, sampling, and inferential testing.
4.Students will be able to achieve (2) and (3) in relation to qualitative inquiry.
5.Students will be able to create and defend a mini-research proposal for a research project.
6.Students will be versed in ethical research behavior.
Weekly class contents are outlined in the schedule section below. Students will first learn about the importance and nature of research in SLA and applied linguistics. Our initial focus will be on quantitative approaches, after which we will look at qualitative approaches. Thereafter we will examine the nature of mixed methods research. Throughout the course, students will be required to read and question as they collect research ideas and techniques. This course will culminate with research proposals that students will submit and present in class.
Doctoral students will be required to complete an additional report demonstrating adequate mastery of research methods in a mock study. This will be designed and completed in consultation with the instructor.
