Notes

【Course Objectives】

This course aims to give students an in-depth understanding of the global spread of English and its influence on Japanese society.

As an outcome of their study in this course, PhD students can
1) apply theories to find critical issues around English as a global language in Japan by themselves
2) find related secondary sources about the issues and evaluate them critically
3) synthesize their findings from secondary sources to find research gaps to generate research questions

【Course Contents】

To meet the aim of this course, we will primarily study how English has been diffused globally and how people have learnt and used English in their context so far through the perspective of World Englishes. Furthermore, we will also study theories related to critical applied linguistics in analyzing the relationship between the English language and globalization in a critical and in-depth manner. Finally, we will apply these to understand the impact of internationalization and the spread of English in Japanese society, in particular.
