【Course Objectives】

When you finish this course, you will be able to
(1) understand the fundamental concept of language contact phenomena.
(2)analyze the sociolinguistic contexts of language contact.
(3) read and evaluate studies on language contact from a variety of approaches.

Ph.D. candidates will also be able to
(4)carry out original research on language contact using own linguistic data.

【Course Contents】

In this course, we focus on the linguistic varieties and linguistic practices that emerge from language contact. We pay attention to the social contexts of contact, as well as the linguistic outcomes of contact. It is also the goal of this course to understand the three major phenomena of language contact: maintenance, shift, and creation, including topics such as borrowing, multilingualism, code-switching, endangered languages, and pidgins and creoles.

Classes will begin with an overview of the topics given by the instructor, followed by discussion and questions raised by students. In each class, designated students will be responsible for leading the discussion of readings.
