【Course Objectives】

Through this course, all students are primarily expected to have a deep understanding of key theories in the area of Bilingualism in Applied Linguistics.

As an outcome of their study in this course, PhD candidates can
1) show their great understanding of current issues related to bilingual education
2) find related secondary sources by themselves and evaluate them critically
3) synthesize their findings from secondary sources to find research gaps to generate research questions

【Course Contents】

In this course, students will first learn about essential theories in Bilingualism. Specifically, the course will focus on phenomena that occur both inside and outside the foreign language teaching classroom, including the differences between the processes of native language acquisition and foreign language acquisition, the nature of pedagogical intervention by foreign language teachers in facilitating language learning, and issues of identity for bilingual learners and teachers. Ultimately, students can critically analyze and explain various phenomena related to bilingualism using the theories they have learned.
