This course aims to deepen students' knowledge and understanding of the history of and major research areas in communication education scholarship by reading relevant literature in Communication Studies in the United States. It also aims to familiarize students with major issues surrounding communication education.
We will first take a brief look at the history of communication education primarily in the United States. Then, we will divide scholarship in communication education into three areas: 1) Communication Education, 2) Instructional Communication, and 3) Critical Communication Pedagogy and learn the characteristics of and major themes/approaches in each area. Towards the end of the semester, we will also discuss communication education in Japan.

毎回課題文献を丁寧に読み込み、自分なりの考えや疑問点をもった上で、授業に臨むことが求められる。特殊研究「講義」という科目名ではあるが、大学院科目ということもあり、対話/ディスカッション形式で授業を進めていく。そのため、各履修者の積極的な参加が期待される。

本科目は、主に米国のコミュニケーション学におけるコミュニケーション教育に関する文献を読みながら、コミュニケーション教育の歴史や主な研究領域を学ぶとともに、コミュニケーション教育を巡る諸課題について理解を深めることを目的とする。博士後期課程の履修生は、コミュニケーション教育をテーマに独自のデータ収集と分析を行い、それを学会発表や（博士）論文執筆に結びつけることを目指す。

まず、（主に）米国におけるコミュニケーション教育の歴史を概観した後、コミュニケーション教育の研究を、1）Communication Education、2) Instructional Communication、3）Critical Communication Pedagogyに大別し、各領域の特徴や主な研究テーマ/アプローチについて学んでいく。学期の終盤では、日本のコミュニケーション教育についても話し合う。
