This course examines how linguistic anthropology, situated at the intersection of linguistic and cultural studies, has addressed issues concerning human culture and society from the perspectives of language and communication. Through close analysis of selected case studies, the course aims to clarify the methodological significance and analytical scope of linguistic-anthropological approaches, and to situate language and communication research within broader socio-cultural inquiry in theoretical terms.
This course first situates linguistic anthropology within the broader field of anthropology and then traces its theoretical developments since the twentieth century, examining how the relationships among language, communication, culture, and society have been conceptualized. Specifically, the course begins with Franz Boas’s articulation of the relationship between linguistic and cultural research, moves through the linguistic relativity associated with Edward Sapir and Benjamin Lee Whorf, Roman Jakobson’s poetics and structural-functional linguistics, and Dell Hymes’s and John Gumperz’s “ethnography of speaking,” and culminates in Michael Silverstein’s theory of language ideology. Through this trajectory, the course explores how perspectives that treat language as a social and cultural practice have been theorized, while also deepening understanding of how the description and analysis of language and communication can serve as a foundation for sociocultural research.

本講義は、言語研究と文化研究の交差領域に位置する言語人類学が、人間の文化・社会をめぐる諸問題に対して、言語およびコミュニケーションの観点からいかに接近してきたかを検討する。具体的な考察事例の精査を通して、言語人類学的分析の方法論的意義と射程を理解し、社会文化研究における言語・コミュニケーション研究の可能性を理論的に位置づけることを目的とする。

本講義では、人類学全体の中で言語人類学がどのような位置を占めるのかを確認した上で、20世紀以降の言語人類学の理論的展開をたどりながら、言語およびコミュニケーションと文化・社会の関係がどのように捉えられてきたのかを検討します。具体的には、フランツ・ボアズによる言語研究と文化研究の関係づけを出発点とし、エドワード・サピア／ベンジャミン・ウォーフの言語相対論、ローマン・ヤコブソンによる詩学・構造機能言語学、デル・ハイムズ／ジョン・ガンパーズによる「ことばの民族誌」、さらにマイケル・シルヴァスティンの言語イデオロギー論へと至る理論的変遷を扱います。以上を通して、言語を社会的・文化的実践として捉える視点がいかに理論化されてきたのかを学ぶと同時に、言語およびコミュニケーションの記述・分析が社会文化研究の基盤となり得ることについて理解を深めます。
