This course is designed to support doctoral students in developing original, theoretically solid research projects on tradition, identity and everyday life through the lens of folkloristics. Students will deepen their understanding of key debates and advanced concepts in folklore studies and related fields, and will refine the methodological and theoretical skills required for doctoral-level scholarship. By the end of the course, students will be able to form research questions that contribute to ongoing academic discussions in the field, collect data by conducting ethically grounded fieldwork, critically organize and interpret data, and apply interdisciplinary theoretical frameworks from folklore studies, cultural anthropology, ethnic studies, and related fields to produce academic work for presentation or publication.
Students will read advanced and recent scholarship in folklore studies and discuss with the instructor and classmates how these works can be used in their own research projects. They will share fieldwork ideas and progress, and will regularly give presentations on their research plans and developing analyses. Students are also expected to respond to their peers’ projects by making comments and asking questions. Through repeated presentations, discussion, and in-class exchange, students will refine their research questions, strengthen their methods, and develop original arguments appropriate for doctoral-level work.
