To understand the current state of research on gender and art studies, students will read and analyse papers on female artists in France and Japan in the 19th and 20th centuries. Students will be required to assess the framework of gender in art studies critically. They will also be expected to apply their assessment to their own research or to present an alternative framework they consider more pertinent to studying gender in art.
Topics to be discussed in this course include the place and status of female artists in Impressionism. We will read papers about the artists Berthe Morisot and her daughter Julie Manet. Students will conduct an in-depth analysis of the conflicts with the contemporary art system that the female artist, as an individual, confronted and overcame during her career. The texts are either in English or Japanese.

絵画などの美術作品とテクストの双方を精査し、分析することに強い関心を持っていることが求められる。
近年、女性美術家に関する研究は一層本格化している。19世紀と20世紀のフランスと日本を中心に、女性芸術家の活動に関する文献を読み、美術とジェンダーの研究の枠組みを批判的に理解し、方法論の応用ならびにより優れた枠組みの提起を試みられるようにする。
To understand the current state of research on gender and art studies, students will read and analyse papers on female artists in France and Japan in the 19th and 20th centuries. フランスの画家ベルト・モリゾ、その娘ジュリー・マネに関する文献を中心に、印象主義における女性の地位を考える。個人としての芸術家が、ジェンダー特性ゆえに活動の場で遭遇したであろう問題について考察を深める。講読テクストは日本語または英語のものを使用予定。
