Each graduate student will set a research theme based on his/her own interests and concerns. Under the guidance of the instructor, the student will conduct an adequate review of the topic, conduct research, and publish the results in domestic and international journals, so that the research results can be finally compiled as a doctoral dissertation.
Students are individually supervised by a supervisor and a sub-supervisor as they search for a research topic, review previous research, design their research and conduct their studies. Students report on the results of their research in Special Studies in Contemporary Psychology, a regular part of the Master's programme, and in the annual debriefing session in February. All members of the Department offer advice to students on how to progress their research.

院生各自が自身の興味、関心に基づき、研究テーマを設定する。教員の指導の下、そのテーマについて十二分なレビューをした上で、研究を実施して、国内外の学術誌に公刊していき、最終的に博士学位論文として研究成果をまとめられるようにする。

研究テーマの探索、研究テーマの検討・絞り込み、先行研究に関する検討、研究計画の立案、研究方法・分析方法についての検討などを、指導教員および副指導教員による個別指導で行う。学生は、研究成果を博士課程前期課程の正課である「現代心理学特殊研究」および、毎年2月に行われる年次報告会で研究の進捗について報告し、専攻教員全員が指導する。
