To understand complex political, economic and cultural historical aspects of the early modern transition period (mainly the 19th century) from the perspective of the former feudal lords who were given the new designation of the nobility.
The title of "nobility" was given to the feudal lords and court nobles at the same time as the return of the lands and people from the feudal lords to the Emperor in 1867. While it was an important element of modernization for long-lived feudal lords to become "nobility," there was no clear definition of what constituted a "nobility." In this lecture, the participants first learn about the nobility system, and then, referring to the Shimadzu family, which has a long history as a feudal lord, as a case study, discuss how they tried and failed to figure out what they should be as a duke, using family historical documents handed down in the Shimadzu family.

日本近世近代移行期（19世紀を中心とする）について、華族という新しい呼称を与えられた旧大名の視点から、政治的側面・経済史的側面・文化史的側面を複合的に理解する。

明治2(1867)年の版籍奉還と同時に、大名と公家には「華族」という呼称が与えられた。長く続いた大名が「華族」になるということは、近代化の重要な要素であるが、「華族」とは何かという明確な規定はなかった。本講義では、初めに華族制について学び、次に大名としての長い歴史をもつ島津家をと事例とし、公爵としていかにあるべきかを試行錯誤していく様子を、島津家に伝わる家の史料を用いながら考えていく。
