【Course Objectives】

Folklore studies is an academic field that rethinks the everyday world to consider culture and society. These lectures aim to question the culture of Japanese society through the "normal things" familiar to us, and to understand contemporary society through folklore.

【Course Contents】

The course will set several themes concerning Japanese folklore studies and will study the culture of Japanese society. This academic year, the course will consider views on (1) physicality, taking gestures, sickness, magic, and urban legends in Japan as examples. (2) And consider views on nostalgia, taking cultural landscapes, community revitalization through festivals, and inventions of "furusato" as examples.
