【Course Objectives】

In comparative education, students will investigate education by comparing education in various countries and regions and examining how they relate to one another. Students should gain a sense of the universal aspects of education. In this academic year, students will become familiar with current literature from a wide range of countries and regions taken from the recent research texts available in that field of research.

【Course Contents】

Students will have literature readings in seminar.
The discussion leader for each class meeting will, along with summarizing concepts from the literature, carry out a development survey in advance based on the contents of the reading, and report the results during class hours. All class members will confirm their understanding of the contents based on the report. The number of the students each week will determine whether the reporting will be done by a discussion leader or by each group. The class prioritizes intensive reading. Discussions are considered as a method for better understanding of the literature.
The first reading planned for the class will be Jeremy Rappleye’s Exploring cross‐national attraction in education: some historical comparisons of American and Chinese attraction to Japanese education (Oxford). With this literature focusing on different approaches in mainly the United States, China, and Japan as an introduction, students will get deeper understanding of the idea of education as universal, as well as Japanese education and society. Students will continue the literature readings with a sense of interest in the world.
