(1) Students will get the basic knowledge and approaches related to community education and lifelong learning.
(2) Students will take an interest in the education people receive and in the various activities that guarantee people the opportunity for education. Students will be able to think broadly and deeply about the meaning of character-building in education.
(3) Students will be aware of themselves as responsible individuals to practice community education and lifelong learning.
Students will consider, from various angles, the activities as individual lifelong learning and social support for it. The class will draw students’ attention not only to institutional initiatives, but also to the efforts to make learning possible out of those institutional initiatives. Students will consider specific examples to get an overall understanding. Students will not only take in knowledge and information, but also think about why such educational opportunities and efforts are necessary in a social context, and be aware of their own relationship to these efforts, and recognize the necessity of supporting lifelong learning.

社会のなかで行われている人びとの学びとその機会を保障するための営みについて、さまざまな角度から考察する。制度的な取組みのみならず、むしろそこからはみ出た形で必要となる学びを可能にするための取組みに注目したい。具体例を取り上げ検討していく形をとるが、単なる知識や情報として受けとめるのではなく、なぜそうした機会や取組みが必要なのかを社会的な文脈のなかで考え、自分との関わりも意識して、人びとの生涯にわたる学びの意味やそれを支えることの必要性に気づいてほしい。

社会教育は学校教育以外の領域で展開している教育を扱う。生涯学習は学齢期に限らず、人間は学び続けるという人間像を前提としている。教育という営みを学校教育に矮小化せず、人間形成の問題を社会との接点において広く捉えることができるようになるためにも、積極的に受講して欲しい。
