• To read and analyze flash fiction from around the world in English
• To participate in class discussions in English

【Course Contents】

In this course students will be introduced to academic reading strategies for different purposes including skimming, scanning, and intensive reading approaches. The course will focus on intensive reading of international flash fiction—short stories of several pages from around the world in English translation. Through regular in-class and out-of-class practice, students will develop strategies to more effectively understand and critically approach works of fiction of any length. In order to facilitate understanding of the texts, we will engage in both active and interactive reading exercises. Work in the course will involve analysis and summaries of the stories and discussion in class, one or two in-class presentations per student, and two short (1-2 page) reading response papers.
