• To practice reading strategies including skimming, scanning, and close reading
• To read and analyze contemporary American short stories
• To discuss in English literary themes encountered in the stories surrounding diversity issues
In this course, students will be introduced to contemporary American short stories that highlight diversity issues. Through regular practice, students will develop strategies to more effectively understand and critically approach literary works and to analyze themes surrounding diversity. In order to facilitate understanding of the texts, we will engage in both active and interactive reading exercises. Work in the course involves regular short summaries of work, one or two in-class presentations per student, and two short reading response papers.

Students will need to come to class ready to contribute having read the outside readings for the week (about 6-10 pages of fiction per week). Students will need to bring summary and analysis of the week’s reading to class.

• The Blackboard course delivery system will be used extensively for sharing course readings and submission of student work.
• Small group and pair discussion will be a regular feature of this course and will complement lectures accompanied by Powerpoint slideshows.
• Late work will only be accepted in the case of an excused absence. Please refer to university policies to determine what qualifies as an acceptable excuse according to the university. Additionally, if you know you will be absent when an assignment is due, you must make arrangements with me to submit your assignment before the due date.
