While acquiring fundamental knowledge centered on an outline of the academic field of Japanese linguistics, students will become able to think academically about everyday phenomena in language.
The course will provide a bird’s-eye image of Japanese linguistics overall, and, for specific academic fields, will explain what it means to target Japanese as a subject of study, what kind of knowledge is needed to analyze Japanese language academically, and what it means to analyze Japanese academically. In Japanese linguistics, research has traditionally been conducted from perspectives including sounds, grammar, notation, and vocabulary. As textbooks are, in the end, indexes that survey the whole of an academic field from a high level, the class will deal with content not in textbooks, as appropriate. In the lectures, students will study matters focused on History of Japanese Language from a variety of perspectives.

日本語学について、学問分野の概略を中心とした基礎的知識を習得するとともに、日常的な言語事象について学術的な考察が行えるようになること。

日本語学の全体像を俯瞰し、「日本語を学問の対象とするとはどういうことか」「日本語を学問的に分析するためにはどのような知識が必要か」「日本語を学術的に分析するとはどのようなことか」といったことについて、具体的な学問分野ごとに概説していく。日本語学では、伝統的に音や文法、表記、語彙その他の視点を用いて研究が行われており、教科書はあくまでも学問分野全体を俯瞰する指標なので、教科書には無い内容も随時扱うことになる。本講義では、日本語の歴史を中心にした事項について、様々な視点から学んでいく。

高等学校までに国語科で習った事項（活用その他）については、前提で話を進めるとともに、中学校レベルの日本史の知識（奈良時代と室町時代の前後関係、各時代の政権の所在その他）は必須であるため、不安がある者は随時復習しておくこと。また、教科書の当該範囲を中心に批判的精読を心掛け、予習復習に励むこと。
