【Course Contents】

The Reception and Development of Kanbun in Japan
This lecture course first introduces basic knowledge about Chinese characters and the grammar necessary to reading kanbun. Then it focuses on kundoku (reading kanbun in accordance with Japanese classical grammar) to examine the history of kanbun’s reception and to read kanbun composed by Japanese authors (Nihon kanbun). Through such readings, we will consider the development in Japan of Chinese characters and kanbun culture from many different perspectives.
