As outlined in the curriculum map, this seminar is intended to familiarize students with the basic terms and methods of literary analysis. Students will learn how to locate a given text in its historical and cultural context and practice in producing a coherent argument that examines a literary text from a specific thematic perspective by composing a term paper.
Widely known as the author of Wide Sargasso Sea (1966), Jean Rhys also produced a number of fine short stories. In this class, we will closely examine these stories in terms of the issues of immigration, race, gender, class, and so on.

短編小説を題材に取り、カリキュラム・マップが目標に定める「文学研究の基礎となる専門用語と分析方法」の修得を目指します。各作品を歴史的・文化的背景に位置付けつつ、特定のテーマに沿ってテクストを分析し、首尾一貫した議論にまとめるすべを学び、最終的にはレポート作成を実践します。

『サルガッソーの広い海』（1966）で知られるジーン・リース（Jean Rhys, 1890-1979）は、すぐれた短篇を多く残してもいます。本授業では、移民と人種、ジェンダー、階級といった様々な要素を内包するとともに、言語表現の次元でも注目に値するリースの作品を丹念に分析し、教室全体で議論を深めていきます。

受講者は全員授業前にテクストの該当部分を精読し、わからない箇所（語彙・構文などの英語に関する問題から、話の流れや特定の事物への言及などの内容にかかわる疑問に至るまで、どのようなものでも）は授業中に解決できるようにメモしてきてください。また、重要だと思った部分についても、授業中にクラス全体と共有できるように記録してきてください。
発表担当時には、事前に指示された通りに個人、ないしグループで準備を進め、授業前にハンドアウトを提出してもらいます。
