Through a close reading of literary texts, students in this course will improve their English reading skills and think about the relationship between self and others.
Trivial things suddenly shatter the peace of daily life, which sometimes forces people to undergo a dramatic transformation and their relationships to be transformed. We will think about such transformations described in American literature by reading short stories in the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries. Students in this course will also learn some basic literary critical terms, concepts, and analytical methods, to analyze literary texts.

文学作品の精読を通して、英文読解力の向上を図るとともに、自己と他者の関係性を考える力を身に付ける。
Through a close reading of literary texts, students in this course will improve their English reading skills and think about the relationship between self and others.
日常の被膜は些細なことで破られる。そうしたとき、人は大きな変容を強いられ、自己と他者の関係性もまた変容する。アメリカ文学において、こうした変容の有り様はどのように描かれるのだろうか。本講では、19世紀、20世紀、21世紀の各時代を代表する短編作品の読解を通して、そのような問題について考えてみたい。同時に、基本的な文学批評の用語、概念、分析方法を学び、文学作品を批評的に読む方法についても考えてみたい。
