Through a close reading of literary texts, students in this course will improve their English reading skills and think about the relationship between plagues and mankind.
Mankind has been engaged in a ceaseless struggle with plagues. How has mankind reacted to invisible plagues and tried to comprehend and control their epidemics? In this course, we will consider such questions through a close reading of several plague tales in the 19th and 20th century. Students in this course will also learn some basic literary critical terms, concepts, and analytical methods, to analyze literary texts.

文学作品の精読を通して、英文読解力の向上を図るとともに、疫病と人間の関係性を考える。
Through a close reading of literary texts, students in this course will improve their English reading skills and think about the relationship between plagues and mankind.
人類の歴史は疫病との闘争であった。人類は疫病という目に見えない存在に対していかに反応し、その存在をいかに理解し、制御しようとしてきたのだろうか。本講では、19世紀と20世紀の代表的な疫病物語の精読を通して、コロナ禍の今、そのような問題について考えてみたい。同時に、基本的な文学批評の用語、概念、分析方法を学び、文学作品を批評的に読む方法についても考えてみたい。
