As outlined in the curriculum map, this seminar is intended to familiarize students with the basic terms and methods of literary analysis. It takes up biography, an important facet of English literature. Students will learn how to locate a given text in its historical and cultural context and practice in producing a coherent argument that examines a literary text from a specific thematic perspective by composing a term paper.
Early twentieth century was not just the age of experimental novels and poems. Behind the scene, a change also came over the genre of biography. This seminar will focus on an example of the so-called 'new biography' and a 'metabiography', which in a way parodies the new mode of life writing.

イギリス文学の重要なジャンルの1つである伝記を題材に取り、カリキュラム・マップが目標に定める「文学研究の基礎となる専門用語と分析方法」の修得を目指します。各作品を歴史的・文化的背景に位置付けつつ、特定のテーマに沿ってテクストを分析し、首尾一貫した議論にまとめるすべを学び、最終的にはレポート作成を実践します。

20世紀初頭、実験的な小説や詩が数多く出版される傍らで、伝記文学にも転機が訪れていました。本授業では、「ヴィクトリア朝的」因習からの決別を宣言した「新しい伝記」の一例と、この新機軸のパロディとも捉えられる「メタ伝記」を一篇ずつ取り上げ、教室全体でこれらを丹念に分析していきます。

発表担当時には、事前に指示された通りに個人、ないしグループで準備を進め、授業前にハンドアウトを提出してもらいます。
