To assist the students improve their abilities in reading, analyzing, and discussing major themes in American literature.
In the second semester of our studies on Literature of the American Dream, we will focus on John Steinbeck's novella Of Mice and Men (1937). The course will begin with a review of the events leading up to the Great Depression of 1929 in an attempt to establish how this catastrophic event nearly destroyed the reality of the American Dream, even though it could not do so in the hearts and minds of the American people.

Students will be assigned 12 to 15 pages of reading homework every week. All assignments must be submitted on time. Students are required to make a group presentation on the readings for the date they are assigned. Unannounced quizzes will be given to monitor student progress with the weekly reading. Students will write one response paper and make a short presentation on the paper in class.
