As outlined in the curriculum map, this seminar aims at cultivating students' reading comprehension skills in order to form a solid basis for their future studies. In particular, it focuses on expanding students' vocabulary and polishing their understanding of the grammatical structure of the English texts.
This seminar will look at short stories written by three major early twentieth-century authors, E. M. Forster, James Joyce, and Katherine Mansfield. Through closely examining and translating each text, students will learn to understand English texts accurately. The process will also direct their attention to the literary and rhetorical devices used in the stories.

英語で書かれた短篇の精読を通して、カリキュラム・マップに示されている「今後の学習・研究の基礎となる読解力」の獲得を目指します。特にイギリス小説の訳読を通したより広い語彙形成、英文構造の理解の徹底に力を入れます。

20世紀初頭の代表的な作家のうちに数えられるE・M・フォースター、ジェイムズ・ジョイス、キャサリン・マンスフィールドの手になる短編小説を輪読します。丁寧に日本語に直しながら作品を精読することで、英語のテクストを正確に理解しつつ、細かな表現技法を拾い上げ、吟味します。
本授業ではあらかじめ発表者を決めることをせず、全員参加方式で進めます。学期中に2回、それまで学び議論した内容を確認する小テストを行います。また、最終授業時には、授業で取り上げなかった英文を用いて、読解力を測る筆記テストを行います。
